Every wall on this site is a lightmap. Here is how we author, bake and ship a room that loads before you notice.

The home page of this site is a single room. It is not a video and it is not a photo: it is geometry, drawn by the browser, lit once on our machines and never again on yours.

Baking means we run the expensive light simulation ahead of time and store the result as textures. The browser then only has to paint colours it already knows. That is why the scene runs at sixty frames on a phone.

The tricky part is budget. Eighteen lightmaps, twelve models, two characters and a dog have to fit inside what a marketing site would normally spend on hero images.
